Editorial Review:

Amazon.comInterval workouts incorporate a variety of activities that are powerful and short in duration. These intervals create an anaerobic workout that forces the body to adjust to variations of intensity and motion. Interval training has the real potential to burn fat and build strength. The Firm: Body Sculpting Basics utilizes these same aerobic and anaerobic components to create a 60-minute workout that promotes strength and stamina. Instructor Susan Harris presents simple dance-style aerobic combinations and weightlifting techniques that are sure to make you break a sweat. This video is somewhat dated (lots of '80s-style leg warmers and traditional dance aerobic movements), but the content is so stellar that it would more appropriately be coined as a fitness classic. PliƩs, squats, and split-leg lunges work the major muscles of the lower body, while lateral raises, curls, and push-ups concentrate on the upper body. Light weights (5 to 8 pounds) are used throughout this workout, and a set of ankle weights may be helpful if you are looking for a challenge. Cueing comes quickly and Harris does not give much information on form or body alignment. Therefore, beginners should watch the informational portion of this video (the segment immediately before the workout) in order to train as confidently and safely as possible. This is a brilliantly designed program that merges weight training and cardio in an effective and approachable (not to mention quick) package. --Olivia Voigts

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - THE BEST
I BOUGHT MY FIRST "FIRM" TAPE IN 1986, WHEN IT COST $60.00. I WAS SO IMPRESSED, I BOUGHT 6 MORE TO GIVE TO MY KIDS AND RELATIVES. I HAVE BOUGHT OVER 100 EXERCISE TAPES OVER THE YEARS BUT THEY DON'T COMPARE TO "THE FIRM" AS FAR AS RESULTS AND FUN. VOLUME I, 2, 3, 4, AND 5 ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! AND THIS ONE IS THE BEST OF ALL. I WORE OUT THE ORIGINAL ONE I BOUGHT. THAT'S WHY I NEEDED THIS ONE

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - still the best!
after having tried several other workouts, this is still my favorite. 22 years later its still the best!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Best floor work ever done in a Firm tape
This was one of my first Firm purchases, many moons ago. It is considered a classic for good reason. The box desciption says it calls for light weights, but you'll probably need a full range of weights from 3-20lb. dumbbells to get the most out of this workout.

It is quite dated now, but as an 80's fan, I don't mind that. It doesn't take away from the workout's effectiveness or fun. The music is motivating. Susan Harris used to be known as "The Iron Goddess" in Firm circles, and she earned the title. Her experience shines through in this performance. She is strong, flexible, and has impeccable form. She obviously has a great rapport with her class, and taught this workout for months before taping it. So she really knows what you're thinking and feeling while you're working out.

You start with a fairly long warm-up. I will say that this an 80's style aerobics beginning, and you do need to watch your back and knees on some of these moves. That said, it is far safer than most of the workouts produced around the same time, by other manufacturers. After the warm-up, you do about 20 minutes of aerobic weight-training. Watch your form- it is easy to hurt your back if you don't perform this with precision(I speak from experience). Then it's on to a longgggggggg floor work segment(about 30 minutes). She includes push-ups, a ton of tablework(the best the Firm ever did, IMO), pec flies, bridge work, inner and outer thigh leg lifts, and ab work. it's tough. Even the fittest amongst us would have to be challenged by this floor work. Susan has some of the best legs I've ever seen, and this workout does more for the thighs and butt than you could ever imagine. The floor work alone is worth purchasing the tape. Finally, you have a stretch. It's all challenging, but Susan keeps it moving well.

This was released on DVD a few years ago, so if you can find it and don't mind an 80's look and feel to your workouts, go for it. A great workout, when used with a little caution.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I wish this was on DVD
I think this VHS is awesome. i have been using this video off and on for a few years. some people don't like her voice and the way she speaks or the outfits, but i find her voice soothing, especially when i am in the burn. i like this old style aerobics and not all the crap moves these days, grapevine, W, the new fangled stuff. I have done loads of work outs and always come back to this one. if you want a good workout and not be mentally exhausted afterwards, you will like this VHS.... please someone see this review and revive the old classics in DVD format.... This VHS right now is very hard to find... it is really a priceless workout... go Susan Harris..you Rock!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best workout tape I have experienced
This tape was produced during the high-aerobics phase of the workout culture and there is some running and jumping jacks involved. However, this tape allows you to work up, or modify down, most of the moves. It also uses standard generic weights and a simple 2 x 4 board - that's all. I was terribly out of shape when I first used this many years ago and I must say, you really do see results in a very short time. It's fun, effective, and most important, focuses on fitness rather than being a "Hollywood" type of tape with too much glitz. Susan Harris is amazing and easy to follow. I bought many tapes over the years, including many more from The Firm. While they are all good, and some are very good, The Firm Vol I is by far the best! I highly recommend it.

Hurricanes, as we've seen, can wreak serious havoc when they strike populated areas. We've never had control over them before, but one researcher thinks they could be broken up with F-4 fighter jets.

In theory, sending in a pair of the jets to do loops around the eye of the hurricane while it's still out over the ocean, creating sonic booms, would break it up before it hits the shore.

Jet fighters flying at supersonic speeds along special trajectories with a hurricane/typhoon at various altitudes would create supersonic booms. In one such embodiment, the trajectories for the supersonic booms of the present invention are counter to the rotational component of the hurricane and/or typhoon being targeted. As such, supersonic booms can be tailored and/or designed to partially and/or fully -negate the basic rotational contribution in a hurricane by slowing down a hurricane's/typhoon's rotation. Additionally, when supersonic booms propagate downward to the surface of the ocean they also destabilize a hurricane's/typhoon's structure by increasing the pressure in the central part of a hurricane's/typhoon's eye.

It's a pretty crazy idea, but I guess it makes sense. It would be pretty amazing to be able to stop any hurricane before it hit shore, saving millions and millions of dollars and who knows how many lives. I can't wait for them to test this out. [Patent via AV Web; Thanks, Jason!]
